RE/Parish » Virtues
As you know, at Barkston Ash we place great importance on educating the ‘whole child’ – spiritually, academically, emotionally, morally, creatively, physically and socially. Character education is an umbrella term for all explicit and implicit educational activities that helps young people develop positive personal strengths called virtues.
Values are principles or standards of behaviour, which we hold as being important. Virtue is the fruit of the value, the outward showing of it/acting out of the value.
This is a real strength of the children in our school and is a great credit to you as parents. This academic year, we will be developing character education through the teaching of the 8 virtues below. We explored these during ‘Virtues Day’ on Monday and, at an age specific level, discussed how we can show and develop these virtues. We will integrate these specifically into our RE teaching and other areas of school life. Next to each virtue in bold, are other words which link with the virtue.
Wisdom – reflection, deliberation, discernment, good sense
Faith – faithfulness
Self-control – temperance, humility, gentleness, simplicity
Justice – honesty, trustworthy, kindness, thankfulness, generosity
Respect - solidarity, love of neighbour, responsible citizen
Love – charity, hospitality, courtesy, service, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, friendship
Hope – prayer, confidence
Courage – patience, perseverance, resilience, determination
If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact me.
