- Barkston Ash Catholic Primary School ReadWrite Inc Progression
At Barkston Ash Catholic Primary School, we are committed to ensuring every child becomes a confident, fluent reader who values reading and language and develops a lifelong love of books. We recognise that secure early reading is the foundation for success across the curriculum and beyond.
Our phonics teaching is delivered through a rigorous, systematic and progressive programme using Read Write Inc, which builds carefully on prior learning and enables children to make rapid and sustained progress. Pupils develop secure phonic knowledge alongside the decoding and spelling skills needed to read and write with confidence, accuracy and understanding.
ReadWrite Inc Phonics
Children begin learning phonics at the start of Reception through the Read, Write Inc. Phonics programme. Upon entry to Reception, children are assessed to identify their starting points in early reading and phonics knowledge.
ReadWrite Inc phonics teaching begins in the first week of Reception and is delivered daily with high expectations and consistency across EYFS and Key Stage 1. Read, Write Inc. sessions are systematically planned and taught by trained staff, ensuring a structured and progressive approach to the teaching of early reading.
Children following the Read, Write Inc. Phonics programme take home a book bag book that is closely matched to their current phonic knowledge. This enables them to practise and consolidate their decoding skills at home and supports the development of reading fluency.
Children are assessed half‑termly, and these assessments are used to review progress and group children flexibly according to their phonic development. This ensures teaching remains closely aligned to pupils’ needs. Where additional support is identified, targeted daily phonics interventions are put in place promptly to ensure all children keep up with the programme.
