Our School

Celebrating!

We are the first school in the Diocese of Leeds to be graded 'Outstanding' in all areas in our Catholic Schools Inspection (June 2023), under the new framework.  We are immensely proud of this fantastic achievement!

We have been named in the Times 2023 top 500 schools in the country list.  Out of all state primary schools in the North of England, we are ranked 7th, and we are the highest ranked primary school out of all Catholic primary schools within the Diocese of Leeds!  This is a fantastic achievement for our whole school community and it is lovely to have the external recognition that the staff and children deserve for their continued hard work and dedication to learning.

About our school

Set in a North Yorkshire village, within easy reach of Leeds, York and Selby, the school enjoys an excellent reputation locally. It serves the Parish of St Joseph The Worker, Sherburn In Elmet. It is the only school in the village of Barkston Ash and therefore also serves the local community.

The school was built in 1856 at a cost of £212 and has grown to meet the needs of the community it serves.

The building comprises a school hall, also used as a dining room, adjacent kitchen, five classrooms, cloaks/toilet facilities, and a well-stocked library area. There is also a Headteacher's Office, Secretary's Office and Staffroom. An ongoing development programme for the building is in place.

The school has a playground, which is marked out for various games, a grassed area which is used for sporting activities, and a play area.

Opening and closing times

School opens at 8.45am and the school day ends at 3.15pm totalling 32.5 hours in a typical week.
