Intent, Implementation and Impact

Curriculum Intent - Our aim and vision for children at Barkston Ash is… 
that all pupils can achieve in Art and Design; that high-quality art lessons will inspire children to think innovatively and develop creative procedural understanding. The intent of our Art curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement in the area of art. Our art curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists.

Our children will be become creative learners, who have knowledge of both local artists and the great artists of the world. Creativity and innovation will be celebrated and children will become skilled at editing and improving the pieces they have created. There will be an emphasis placed on individuality and children will be given the freedom to explore art using their imagination. Children will have embedded the key art and design skills needed to allow them to produce inventive pieces of art.  

The aims of teaching art and design in our school are:
  • To engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
  • As pupils progress through school, they should begin to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • To become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Curriculum Implementation
We teach a skills-based art curriculum, which allows children to express their creative imagination as well as providing them with opportunities to practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture. This is supported through the studying of key artists and the development of a knowledge of their work.

At Barkston Ash, we split the terms between Art and D&T, with subjects alternating each half term. Lessons involve studying existing pieces of art, sketching aspects of these, with a particular focus on the necessary skills, before completing a final piece. The children will then be given constructive feedback and next steps, with further opportunities to create the art piece, to improve their work and ensure that the skills are being developed. The evidence of their work is collected within the art sketch book which follows the children through the school. 


Early Years Foundation Stage
Pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities. They have opportunities to learn to:
  • Explore the textures, movement, feel and look of different media and materials
  • Respond to a range of media and materials, develop their understanding of them in order to manipulate and create different effects.
  • Use different media and materials to express their own ideas
  • Explore colour and use for a particular purpose
  • Develop skills to use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately
  • Select appropriate media and techniques and adapt their work where necessary

Key stage 1
Pupils are taught:
  • To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
  • To use drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
  • To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
  • About the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.    
 
Key stage 2
Pupils are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
 
Pupils are taught:
  • To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
  • To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting, collage and sculpture with a range of materials, for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay, textiles.
  • About great artists, architects and designers in history.

Curriculum Impact
Our Art Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes;
  • A celebration of learning for each term which demonstrates progression across the school;
  • Pupil discussions about their learning; which includes discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work 
Ongoing assessments take place throughout the year. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. This data is analysed on a termly basis to inform and address any trends or gaps in attainment. End of year reports detail art attainment in relation to age related expectations. 
 
Children in Foundation Stage are assessed within Expressive Arts and Design and their progress is tracked termly using the tapestry tracker system. Age related expectation levels are reported to parents at the end of the reception year.

The 2018/2019 results showed that 100% of children at the end of Key Stage 1 achieved the expected end of year standard with 44% of children working at the exceeded standard. 81% of children at the end of Key Stage 2 achieved the expected end of year standard with 27% of children working at the exceeded standard.
