May 2015 – Y5/6 Cricket Competition Winners!
Our Year 5/6 Cricket team took part in the Sherburn cluster Kwik Cricket Tournament at Church Fenton Cricket Club alongside six other schools in the area.
They were drawn to play in Group B with Kellington Primary School and Kirk Fenton Primary School. We had to play each team twice and won all 4 matches very convincingly! After winning their league with four comprehensive victories, they then met South Milford (the winner of the other league) in the final! It was a very close and  tense final. Barkston Ash batted first and made 235 for 2 wickets. It needed an excellent bowling and fielding display to keep South Milford from the required target and the team produced just that as South Milford reached 229 for 3 wickets, meaning that Barkston Ash won by 6 runs! They will now go through to the area final at Selby cricket club on Friday 5th June.  Congratulations to the whole team: Poppy (joint captain), Reece (joint captain), William H, Holly, Grace, Sam, Alex, Oli, Rory and Max.

May 2015 – Y5/6 Selby League Champions’ League Final
Barlby Community Primary 8 – 1 Barkston Ash
The Y5/6 team took part in the prestigious Selby Champions League final at Riccall Primary School against a brilliant Barlby Community Primary School team. Although the boys tried their very hardest, Barlby ran out comfortable 8-1 winners. Congratulations to Barlby Community Primary who played fantastic football and were deserved winners. They are playing in the national finals later this term and we wish them all the best.
Congratulations to all the team for keeping going and showing great sportsmanship. Jack took his goal very well and we had other opportunities from Oli and Sam that went close. We had to defend heroically at times with Oscar the man of the match for a string of excellent saves. The team in full was: Oscar, Luca, Oli, Josh, Sam, Alex, Jack, Harvey and Thomas. Finishing the season as league champions and champions’ league runners up is an excellent achievement. Thank you also to all the parents who helped with transport and supported them.

April 2015 – Y3/4 Friendly match V Saxton
Saxton 2 – 4 Barkston Ash
Saxton and Barkston Ash took part in a very entertaining friendly match. Barkston started the game well with Fergus making some excellent runs down the right wing, delivering a number of dangerous crosses. After several near misses, a good run and finish by James gave Barkston the lead. Saxton started the second half strongly and an excellent long range effort gave Theo no chance in goal. Good work from Joe and James soon set up Callum who restored Barkston’s lead. A great run and finish from Fergus then extended the lead as he chipped the ball over the keeper and into the top corner. Good build up play by Oli and Harry set up Robert who finished brilliantly into the bottom corner. A good finish gave Saxton a second goal before the final whistle. It was an excellent all round performance but the man of the match was Fergus who capped a strong all round display with a terrific goal. Well done to all the team: Theo, Harrison, Harry, Fergus, James (captain), Oli, Joe, Callum and Robert.

April 2015 – Tag Rugby Competition
Ten children in Year 5 took part in a Y5/6 tag rugby competition at Kellington Primary School. The team took part in 5 frenetic matches! The pace was intense and all 5 matches were very close. Overall we won one match, drew two matches and lost two matches, finishing in joint 3rd place overall. Congratulations to the whole team:  Adam, Dylan, Sam (captain), Emily, Jack, Rory, Alex, Sophie, Rachael and George.

April 2015 – Selby Champions League Semi-Final
Longman’s Hill 0 – 1 Barkston Ash
Following confirmation that we have won the Selby Western league, we qualified for the Champions League semi-final against Longman’s Hill. Longman’s Hill had not lost a game all season and it was clear from the start that it was going to be a very tough match. Longman’s Hill dominated the first half, they were strong and quick to the ball and we had to defend very well. Despite their greater possession, we defended superbly and limited the opposition to only long range efforts. Against the run of play, it was Barkston who took the lead. A long ball by Oli was brilliantly flicked on by Jack’s head into the path of Sam Luke who finished expertly into the bottom corner.
In the second half Barkston took the game to Longman’s Hill. A long range strike from Josh was well saved, Harvey’s header was saved and a great move involving Alex and Sam ended with Jack narrowly missing the target. With Thomas joining Oli and Luca in a back 3, there was no breaching our defence and Oscar went the entire half without touching the ball! Scenes of joy from players and fans alike greeted the final whistle. It was a great team performance but man of the match was Joshua Falk for a tenacious display in midfield. Well done to the whole team: Oscar, Luca, Oli, Josh, Sam, Alex, Harvey, Thomas and Jack. Captain Luca and vice-captain Jack were still celebrating in school the next day!

April 2015 – Sherburn Cluster Swimming Competition

March 2015 – ESFA Small Schools Cup
North Regional Seven-a-side Finals
After winning the North Yorkshire ESFA Small School Cup last term, we qualified to play in the North Regional finals at Cramlington in Newcastle. We represented North Yorkshire against the winning schools from Manchester, Durham, Cumbria, Cheshire and Northumberland. The facilities were amazing and it was fantastic to play on 3G pitches. The standard of football was extremely high but the boys showed they were more than worthy of taking part in such a prestigious tournament. The results are below:
Barkston Ash 1 – 1 Newcastle Boys’ School
Sam Luke
Barkston Ash 0 – 2 St Joseph’s Primary School
Barkston Ash 1 – 0 Walney Primary School
Barkston Ash 1 – 0 St John Fisher Primary School
Barkston Ash 0 – 4 St Oswald’s
The boys represented both our school and the county extremely well. The top 2 teams went through to the national finals at Wembley. St Oswald’s were the deserved winners with 13 points. There were then 3 teams level on 7 points. Unfortunately we finished 4th on goal difference. It was still a great achievement to finish 4th and get so close to the national finals.
We were then presented with our county championship medals and trophy. Below are some pictures from the event,
Big thanks to all the parents who took us there and supported us so well.
Well done to the whole team who played so well: Luca (captain), Oscar, Oli, Sam, Joshua, Alex, Jack, Rory and George.

March 2015 – Y3/4 Boys’ Football Match V Brotherton
Game 1: Brotherton 1 – 3 Barkston Ash
Game 2: Brotherton 0 – 4 Barkston Ash

Our very excited group of Year 3/4 footballers took to the pitch for the first time this season in two matches against Brotherton Primary School. In the first match Barkston Ash took the lead when Callum James converted a penalty into the top corner. James Rennocks curled a free kick into the top corner just a few minutes later and then did it again from a similar position! Brotherton fought back and Theo made a good save before they got a deserved goal back. Man of the match in this game was James Rennocks for a good performance all round and two excellent free kicks.
The second match was end to end for the first ten minutes but with no goals. Theo made two good saves, Harrison and Joe defended well and the midfield trio of Fergus, James and Oli were linking up well with Robert and Callum up front. A great solo run and finish from James gave Barkston the lead and then a great team goal ended with Harry lifting the ball over the keeper to double the lead. In the last 5 minutes Barkston doubled their lead as first Oli, with a great first time finish into the top corner, and then Joe, finishing off a great passing move and excellent pass from Robert, with a precise shot into the corner, made the score 4-0. Man of the match in this games was Harrison Jenkin for strong tackling and excellent passing.
The whole team performed really well in both games and played with skill, determination and huge amounts of enthusiasm – well done to all of you! The team are pictured below. Back row (left to right): Oli, Joe, Theo, Robert, Harrison and Harry. Front row: Fergus, James and Callum.

March 2015 - Y5/6 Boys' League Match V Hambleton
Hambleton 1 - 2 Barkston Ash

The Y5/6 boys’ team returned to league action with an away fixture against Hambleton and once again both teams produced a fantastic match of high quality football. Barkston Ash started the game strongly and hit the bar twice in the first ten minutes. First Sam Luke hit the underside of the bar from long range then Oli Stables struck the woodwork direct from a free kick. Hambleton then came back into the game but Luca and Oli kept them at bay with some strong tackling. Five minutes before half term Barkston took the lead; a brilliant lay off by Jack Barrett set Sam free and he finished well into the corner. The second half started with the same high tempo and after a good passing move, Hambleton equalised with a good finish into the bottom corner. Barkston Ash responded well though with the midfield trio of Josh, Alex and Sam linking up well. With 5 minutes to go Josh hit an excellent long range shot that was tipped on to the post, Harvey followed up well but saw his effort rebound against the post too! Moments later though, another Josh piledriver rebounded to Harvey who made no mistake in slotting the ball home and making it a debut to remember. Barkston defended well for the remaining minutes to complete the win. Special mention should go to Oscar in goal who kept his concentration and handled well a number of long range efforts on goal. The man of the match was Alex though who is producing consistently excellent performances. He showed great skill, pace and passing ability as well as working hard to track back and defend.
The team in full were: Oscar, Luca (C), Oli, Josh, Sam, Alex, Jack and Harvey. Well done to the whole team!
March 2015 - Y5/6 Girls’ Football Friendly Match

Sian was solid as ever in goal; Poppy, Grace and Eve tackled hard and defended stoutly; Stephanie, Molly, Rachael and Ellie (in her first ever match!) passed and dribbled well; Lindsey and Emilie fired in a number of impressive shots on goal. There were over 120 children running and it was amazing to see 7 of the first 8 finishers to be children from Barkston Ash! This included the top 3 finishes. A special congratulations to 1st place Finn Hardcastle, 2nd place Matthew Hutton and 3rd place Sam Falk. They were presented with certificates by the school sports manager Andy Jackson and then by the KS1 Cross Country captain Ocsar Gilvier-Shakespeare during Celebration assembly!

November 2014 - Y5/6 Boys’ League Match V Hambleton
Hambleton 1 - 2 Barkston Ash

The boys’ football team played their last league match of the calendar with a visit to last season’s champions Hambleton. Both teams produced a fantastic match with some excellent football on display. Against the run of play, Barkston took the lead with another typical Jack Barrett poacher’s goal! Closing down the defence tightly, as he did all game, Jack managed to turn the ball home from close range. Barkston were galvanised by that goal and started playing some wonderful passing football – Josh, Sam and Alex all playing some great two touch football. The second goal wasn’t long in coming. Joshua Falk struck an excellent long range shot (Steven Gerrard style!) that was well saved by the goalkeeper, Alex turned the ball back into the danger area and there was the right man in the right place – Jack Barrett - to make it 2-0. During the second half Hambleton put Barkston under great pressure but Oli, Luca, Oscar and Thomas (along with the whole team) were excellent in defence showing great determination to keep the attacks at bay. Hambleton did work a goal back with 7 minutes to go but Barkston stood strong and looked dangerous on the break to end the game as winners. It was a fantastic game between two excellent teams. Man of the match was Jack Barrett. In addition to his two goals (making 8 for the season so far!) he also battled hard up front, held the ball up well and passed the ball superbly. Well done to the whole team: Oscar, Luca, Oli, Thomas, Josh, Alex, Sam and Jack.

November 2014 - Girls’ Cluster Football Tournament
A big well done to our Y5/6 girls’ team who performed brilliantly in the Sherburn Cluster football tournament. With many of the girls playing in their first ever match, the team showed skill, determination and enthusiasm. In their first match they beat Brotherton 1-0 - Emilie Jarrett scored the winner with a great finish after excellent build up play by Lindsey Kilcoin. There was then a very close match between Barkston and Hambleton that finished 0-0. When Hambleton beat Brotherton 1-0, it left the overall winners to be decided on penalties. Congratulations to Hambleton who beat us 3-2 on penalties. The whole team though should be very proud of themselves. Sian was an excellent goalkeeper and with Grace, Eve and Poppy defending so well, it was no surprise that we didn’t concede a goal in either game. Molly, Rachael, Steph and Lindsey all worked really hard in midfield -tackling, passing and dribbling with 100% effort. Up front Emilie led the line well, always being a danger to the opposition. Well done to the whole team - a fantastic effort!

October 2014 - ESFA Cup Football Champions!
Congratulations to our boys’ football team for winning the area small school’s ESFA cup at Brotherton Primary School. Despite taking the lead in the first game against Brotherton (following a good finish from Jack Barrett), Barkston Ash then found themselves 3-1 down with only 4 minutes remaining. Two good finishes from Sam Luke rescued the game and gave them a chance in the deciding game against a very good Hambleton team. Barkston Ash knew only a win would leave them as winners of the tournament. In a very entertaining game Barkston played superbly throughout the game and with just three minutes remaining Jack Barrett brilliantly turned home Sam Luke’s excellent cross. Congratulations to the whole team who defended solidly and fully deserved the win. Well done to the whole team: Oscar, Luca, George, Sam, Alex, Rory, Oli, Jack and Josh.

September 2014 - League Double Header V Brotherton
Game 1: Barkston Ash 6 - 3 Brotherton
Game 2: Barkston Ash 2 - 2 Brotherton

The boys’ football team started their league season with two excellent performances at Brotherton Primary School.
In the first match, despite being behind twice, the team showed great determination to get back in the game and surge ahead. The goals were scored by Oli Stables, with a fine long range strike, two Sam Luke goals (on his A team outfield debut!), a poacher’s goal from Jack Barrett, a brilliant debut finish from Rory Reid and an own goal. Man of the match was Sam Luke for showing great energy up and down the wing and scoring two vital goals.
The second match was another example of Barkston Ash not giving in. In a close encounter, Brotherton scored two good goals to take a two nil lead with just five minutes. Jack Barrett gave the team hope with a typical Jack poacher’s goal and he then brilliantly laid on the winner for the excellent Oli Stables who equalised in the final minute. Man of the match in this game was captain Luca who kept the defence tight and drove forward to help the attack in the final few minutes. Well done to the whole team who performed well throughout both matches. The team in full were: Oscar, Luca, George, Thomas, Ellis, Josh, Sam, Oli, Rory and Jack.

Overall the team finished in 5th place out of 8 teams. The team in full were: Thomas Ellis, Luca Noblett (captain), Jack Barrett, Oli Stables, Joshua Falk, Oscar Fountaine, George Hoskins and Alex Rennocks.
