Y6 Leavers' Liturgy - July 2014
The Year 6 children ran a special (and very emotional!) final Leavers’ Liturgy of the year. The children each gave a final speech and picked their own hymns and prayers. Mr Craigen presented a brilliant movie of their time at Barkston Ash. We will miss our Year 6 children very much but wish them well at High School.

End of Year Award Winners - July 2014
To mark the end of a very successful year, we gave out end of year awards during the last Celebration Assembly of the year. These are annual awards and the shields will remain in school with the winning children’s names added each year. The award winners took home a trophy each.

Outstanding Sportsman of the Year Award (voted for by the children): Sam Perrin
Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year Award (voted for by the children): Jessica Whyte
Academic Achievement Award (this was awarded to the child who made most progress in reading, writing and maths between KS1 and KS2): Nell Brewin
The Ann Maguire ‘Make a Difference’ Award (awarded to the child who has really ‘made a difference’ to the whole life of the school): Emma Plews

Class 5 Summer Production - A Blast From The Past - July 2014
Class 5 put on a brilliant performance for their summer production; they showed great confidence, singing and comedy timing. The musical - A Blast from the Past - is a comedy based on how school has changed over the year.It was a fantastic team effort by everyone and they created a tremendous evening’s entertainment. Class 5 children selected the charities Dogs Trust and Cancer Research for the collection afterwards and raised £72.00.


School Council Celebration Lunch - July 2014
The school council celebrated the end of their work this year with a special celebration lunch in the outdoor classroom. Rather than use any of their £100 budget to fund the lunch, they brought in their own food for the party and have chosen to donate their year’s budget to the library.

Sports Day - July 2014
We had a wonderful sports day where the sun shone almost as brightly as the children did! In the morning Class 5 organised a variety of different non-competitive events for each child to try. These included: speed bounce, javelin, target throw, long jump and chest push. In the afternoon the children then competed in their colour teams for a variety of races. Congratulations to the green team who finished as overall winners!


1st Communion Mass - July 2014
It was a very special day when Lucia, Sophie, Oscar, Aoife, Ember-Rose, Caitlin, Thomas, Gabrielle and Isabel received their First Communion. The children looked amazing and it was a very moving Mass.

Helping Hands BBQ - July 2014
We were blessed with wonderful weather for our annual school BBQ. It was a wonderful evening with lots of exciting activities and stalls taking place. A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make it such a fantastic evening, especially Mrs Rennocks who co-ordinated the whole event. As well as being a lovely social event, it also raised lots of money for school. We’ll keep you posted once we know the final figure.


Tour de France day - July 2014
To celebrate the Tour de France day coming to Yorkshire, we had a special Tour de France theme day where all our learning was focused on the Tour de France. We learnt all about the route, the different materials on a bike and the history of the great race. Classes 1 and 2 even took part in a special time trial around our playground!

Smoothie/Balloon Bikes and Dance Mats - June 2014
Children in Years 5 and 6 had an amazing afternoon using equipment from Selby Leisure services. The children learnt about healthy active living and made fruit smoothies powered by bikes! They also blew up balloons using pedal power! The children also had the chance to use dance mats, taking part in competitions using the screen as a guide.

Barkston Ash Scarecrow Festival - June 2014
Children from each class created the ‘Despicable Me’ scarecrows as part of the Barkston Ash Village Scarecrow Festival. The theme was movie stars, and we were happy to be a part of the village scarecrow hunt.

Choir Performance - Scarecrow Festival - June 2014
The school choir were invited to perform at Barkston Ash village hall as part of the annual scarecrow festival. They sang four songs beautifully, including three tracks from their current album.

The Y3/4 Cricket Team at Headingley - June 2014
Following the Y3/4 cricket team’s victory in the Drax Cup (see sports page for more details), they were awarded 12 free tickets for the first day of the Test Match at Headingley! The children (and adults!) had a great time cheering on England against Sri Lanka.

CD Recording Day - June 2014
We had an amazing day recording our School CD. A professional music recorder came into school with specialist microphones and recording equipment. We designed our CD cover and recorded 15 songs. Each class recorded two tracks and the choir recorded five. Albums are now available to buy from the school office priced at £8.25.

Soft Drinks Challenge - June 2014
Children in Year 5 had a wonderful day at York University where they took part in a special enterprise day. Working in groups they had to design and advertise their own soft drink product. There were a large number of different groups from a variety of schools taking part but it was Sian and Eve with their ‘Sweet Zippers’ drink that impressed the judges! Well done girls!
European Day - June 2014
We had a special ‘European Day’ throughout the school as part of our ongoing international work. Each class focused their learning on the following countries. Class 1 – Wales and Portugal, Class 2 – Netherlands, Class 3 – Italy, Class 4 – Spain,  Class 5 – Switzerland. Thank you to all the teachers (and family helpers) who planned such interesting and exciting learning for the children.

Thank you Helping Hands - £5000! - May 2014
Mr Power received a cheque for £5000 during the last Celebration Assembly of the half-term from Helping Hands chairperson Mrs Jenkin. This is to help fund the new school laptops and ipads that will be arriving in June. Well done to everyone who has helped to support all the fundraising that has made such a fantastic total.

Helping Hands - Sponsored Bounce - May 2014
Every child in the school has taken part in a special ‘Sponsored Bounce’ challenge to raise money for school. Each child had one minute to bounce as many times as they can and got sponsored for this. 

SATS Breakfast Club! – May 2014
During SATS week the Y6 children have been treated to a special SATS breakfast club where they have come into school early and been able to relax with their friends and have a good breakfast before their tests. The Power/Craigen breakfast café was a big success!

Gardening in Class 3 – May 2014
Children in Class 3 have started a new gardening project! They have planted tomato, leeks and potatoes to link with their work on healthy eating and growing their own food.

Easter Rocks with Class 4 – April 2014
Class 4 had an amazing experience at St Robert’s church in Harrogate. They  joined St John Fisher RC High School and other feeder Primary schools to perform ‘Roll Back The Stone’ and ‘Easter Rocks’. They were fantastic! 

Choir Concert – March 2014
The Key Stage 2 choir performed a selection of songs they have learnt this term during a special choir concert. Parents and parishioners enjoyed renditions of liturgical songs as well as hits from Katy Perry and Emilie Sande! Emma and Lara wrote and presented the introductions for the concert and each individual song. 

Good Shepherd Appeal and Sport Relief – March 2014
Children donated part of their pocket money to wear non-uniform ‘Sporty’ clothes and raised £133 for the Good Shepherd Appeal. To raise money for Sport Relief, every child in the school walked, hopped, danced or ran the 23 laps of our school playground to run a mile! Altogether we raised over £700. Well done everyone!

Robinwood – Y5/6 Residential – March 2014
The Year 5/6 children had an amazing three days at Robinwood. They took part in 15 brilliant activities, developing their teamwork, independence, resilience and confidence. The children behaved superbly and really got the most out of their exciting adventure.


Education Sunday – 16th February
We packed out St Joseph’s Church for Education Sunday. It was a beautiful Mass; the children led the readings, bidding prayers and offertory procession. The choir also performed a hymn to the congregation following communion. 

Positive Psychology Week – February 2014
We had a wonderful Positive Psychology week in school. During this week, the children learnt about how to be happy, including how to form positive relationships, maintain good self-esteem, give and receive compliments and turn negative thoughts into positive ones. There was lots of fantastic, creative cross curricular work around this theme.


Author Visit – January 2014
A group of Year 6 children had a special visitor from local author Simon Benn. They gave him plenty of ideas and inspiration for his latest book and took part in some creative writing activities of their own.

KS2 Advent Presentation - December 2013
The children in Key Stage 2 gave three brilliant performances of their Advent Presentation. The Christmas story was told and acted through Gospel readings and nine beautifully sung songs.

KS1 Nativity – December 2013
Class 1 and 2 gave two fantastic performances of their nativity ‘Stable Manners’. The nativity told the story from the point of view of the animals in the stable, leading them to realise that Jesus was the star of the show.

Card Making Day – December 2013
During Christmas card making day, each class spent the day using their card skills to create a huge pile of liturgical Christmas cards. These will now be distributed to parishioners and local residents.

Singing at Highfield – December 2013
The school choir entertained the residents of Highfield Nursing home; they were a really big hit with their audience! The choir really enjoyed having the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and it was clear that their presence at Highfield was greatly appreciated.

20 plenty – November 2013
We joined Barkston Ash Nursery and local residents in campaigning for the speed limit outside school to be reduced to 20mph. Children in Class 5 have been writing persuasive letters to the council and created their own banners and posters.

Advent wreaths – November 2013
Reverend Otter joined us in school to help us make Advent wreaths for each class. The children learnt about the meaning and symbolism associated with the Advent wreaths and really enjoyed making their own wreaths for class.

Children in Need – November 2013
We raised £165 for Children in Need. The School Council organised a non-uniform day and a special raffle for Pudsey bear, won by Lauren Jones. Here’s school councillor Luca Noblett presenting the prize!

Anti-Bullying Week – November 2013
18th – 22nd November was anti-bullying week. We all learnt about the importance of being a good friend, looking out for others and making sure that we all ensure there is no bullying at Barkston Ash.

Faith Day – November 2013
To celebrate the culmination of the Catholic Year of Faith, we had a special Faith day in school. We started the day with Mass and then kept the theme of Faith running through all our lessons. These lessons included: writing, drama, role play and singing and all helped to develop the children’s understanding of faith. Pictured below is Father McCarthy sharing ‘Daniel in the Lion’s Den’ with the children in Class 2 and Class 5 creating their own liturgical dance to the creed.


Martin House Assembly – November 2013
As part of Class 4’s environment topic, they had a special recycling, re-use sale. They agreed to donate the money raised and give it to Martin House Hospice. Altogether they raised £145. A representative from Martin House came to receive the cheque and teach the children about the work that they do.

Harvest Festival – October 2013
Children in Class 5 led our school harvest festival. This year the theme was Cafod’s ‘Big Share’. The children raised money through a non-uniform day which was sent to Cafod who help children in the third world. We also brought items of food that we delivered to Leeds Crypt, to help the homeless. Big Sing – October 2013
Class 5 joined other Catholic Primary schools in the diocese to take part in ‘The Big Sing Liturgy Thing’ at St Theresa’s Catholic Primary school in Leeds. They took part in a variety of fun singing, dancing and worship activities.

Welcome Mass – September 2013
Father McCarthy joined us to celebrate the start of our school year with a special Welcome Mass.
